Butte-to-Butte 2009

July 4th, 2009
Every year the Hanes family runs the Butte-to-Butte 10k (6.2 miles) here in town. The race is Eugene's largest road run and is always an awesome way to start the 4th. This year, one of my three brothers, Pete, ran for the fourth year in a row, his son, Petey, for the second year, Tanner, my oldest for the 6th or 7th year, Truett, my youngest son, ran his 5th I believe, Tracey of course ran and my stepdad, Greg, ran his first ever B2B. Everyone ran well.
I was hurting. I guess still not fully recovered from the Bighorn 100. I struggled through in 39 minutes 31 seconds for a 6 minute 22 second per mile average, finishing 58th out of nearly 2,600 runners. Yup, slowest 10k in years, but I just wanted to get out there and get through it, trying not to be in too much pain. It didn't help when some dude wanted to try and out sprint me to the line. I couldn't let that happen so I held him off, but it was painful. After the race I ran six more easy miles to get the kinks worked out. All in all, it was another memorable day spent with those I care about.
Thanks for the photos Mom.

I ran my first ever 10K on the 4th (Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta). It’s a pretty big race, too, with over 50,000 finishers! Wish I could run 6 more miles after I was done with the first 6.2, but I’ll get there. Way to hold that joker off.
Way to go! Tough to get back out there and knock the dust off your feet after the Bighorn. Congrats and Great photo of the fam!
